In northern China, especially in regions like Northeast China, the traditional custom is to eat dumplings (饺子) during the Winter Solstice. It is believed that eating dumplings can help ward off the cold. The custom of eating dumplings also serves as a way to celebrate the family, as the entire family often gathers together to make and share them.

In contrast, in southern China, the Winter Solstice tradition involves eating tangyuan (汤圆), which are glutinous rice dumplings, typically filled with sweet or savory fillings. Tangyuan symbolizes family unity and harmony, representing the wish for health and happiness for loved ones. The round shape of tangyuan signifies wholeness, and the act of eating these sweet treats strengthens the connection between family members, making it a time for bonding and sharing joy.
