Should Toilet Tank Be Cleaned?

Dec 06, 2022 Leave a message

We often neglect the toilet tank, almost every home has one, which can store the water used to clean the toilet. Usually, we only clean the toilet seat, the lid and the outside of the toilet, but we do clean the tank behind the toilet. The toilet tank is likely to have mould, or a build up of minerals in the water, so we should clean the toilet tank.

Cleaning procedures

1. Find the water valve. The water in the toilet tank must be controlled so that the water stops flowing into the toilet tank. The water valve is usually located on the back wall of the tank, or near the bottom of the toilet, then close the water valve and stop working. Do not allow water to flow into the tank.

2. Clean the toilet tank. Remove the lid of the toilet tank and place it in a place where it will not get in the way. Then allow the tank to drain completely, which may take 2-3 times depending on the size of the tank.

3. Assess the condition of the tank. If a new toilet tank, you can only use a disinfectant cleaner. However, if the bottom of the tank turns a rusty colour, you may need to clean the tank thoroughly with vinegar.

4. Clean with disinfectant. Spray disinfectant inside the walls and floor of the tank, avoid spraying the cleaner on metal parts that could cause corrosion. Then allow the solution to work for at least 10 minutes before wiping it off. (Use a long-handled brush to remove dirt. Do not use the toilet brush you use to clean the toilet. This is because it can cause bacteria to enter the water tank.)

Then use a wet sponge. Clean every part of the operation, including floats, chains, filler tubes and other components, with a small amount of disinfectant.

5. Open the water valve again and allow water to fill the tank. Then press the button 2-3 times and use again.
